Purgatory

Purgatory is the stage of purification which occurs after death in the soul of someone who had not turned away from God in life, and yet who is still encumbered with unrepented venial sin or the temporal punishment of past mortal sins. Biblically based, purgatory is the merciful doctrine that the final stage of cleansing can occur even after death, since nothing less than perfect can endure the all-holy presence of God.
