The Bishop Helmsing Institue is an apostolate of the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph designed to aid the lay faithful in knowing, loving, and serving God. The Institute offers courses which cover a variety of topics including an extensive study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Sacred Scripture.
The purpose of the program is to deepen the faith and spiritual life of the students and to help them effectively ‘think with the Church’ about issues in the modern world. Courses can be taken by adults for personal enrichment and faith development, or as part of a three year catechist training program.

Apologetics 101
Apologetics is the study of how to reply to challenging faith questions. In this course we will use the Bible, the writings of the Early Church Fathers, history and logic to explain the teaching of the faith. The objective is to show the reasonableness of the faith and its deep roots and integrity. A second objective is to recognize the universal call to holiness and how students might live lives of faith in the midst of the world. The course will examine topics such as papal authority, apostolic succession, justification, the communion of saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Sacrifice of the Mass.
